A Lingering Issue

Just incase anyone would like an interesting movie to watch about the womens suffrage movement Iron Jawed Angels, is a great one to watch here is a link to a trailer if anyone is interested http://youtu.be/StF3_Mj0tBg. The first article that we read reminded me alot of whats going on in our world today concerning gay marriage. In the article it talks about how women couldn't vote, were told how to act and were trying to pass the vote from statee to state. Two women had a huge impact on this movement and really got it going. They held meetings, walked in protest, went state to state giving speeches, and fought hard for somthing they felt to be injust. The articled mentioned that there were books telling women how to act and society agreed for the most part with it."Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives."(A Tsunami in History) This is all so closely related to the issues we face in today's socitey. Just like the women put up flyers, today Homosexuals hoping to get married, have made websites to promote the cause.http://www.freedomtomarry.org. In a world that claims everyone is free to be themselves, it just doesn't seem to be true. Countless deaths have beens caused because of the hatred toward homosexuals. http://www.matthewshepard.org/our-story this is the story of a boy who was killed because of who he liked.Society kept making him feel like an outcast and was telling him how to act. Much like the women were told how to act.  Society is threatened when a change occurs, so the first thing it does is tell people how they are suppose to behave. We seem to be facing the same injustice today. Like back in the 1900's people have gone state to state trying to pass gay marriage as a law and so far havent had much success. Its unforunate to think that people are still so ignortant to what freedom really means. It is now alot easier to get the word out about the cause and celebraties have stepped up, much like the young women of the suffrage movement. Stanton and Anthony were the faces of the movement much like today Ellen Degeneres seems to be the face of making gay marriage legal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3huRVrckY8&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PLF503C3559F5E14B2. It was a long struggle to get women the right to vote but it was one so worth while. I hope one day the vote will pass in every state to give everyone who is in love the right to get married.

The second article also reminded me of gay marriage because it spoke of how the women were afraid of being something because it could effect their life to much. "Young women may believe that a feminist identity puts them out of the pool for many men" (Fear of Feminism) The article made it clear that what these women are afriad of is being classified as something that others might find unappealing. Like so many people have been afriad to come out because they think its not what is acceptable. Its sad that people are afriad to say how they feel because of how others will respond. Lets hope that soon people won't be afraid to say how they really feel and can think for themselves.
